Why Accept Online Payments?
Getting paid faster is good for business. Here’s why many contractors add online payments:
- Faster payment - Clients can pay immediately when they receive an invoice
- Professional appearance - Online payments signal a modern, established business
- Less chasing - No more waiting for checks in the mail or following up on late payments
- Client convenience - Clients can choose cards or bank transfer based on their preference
- Lower fees for large jobs - ACH bank transfers have a capped fee, great for big invoices
How It Works
Tallie uses Stripe Connect to handle payments securely:
- You connect your Stripe account - A one-time setup process
- Clients receive invoices - With a Pay button
- They pay right on the page - A secure payment window opens on the invoice, payment link, or deposit page. Clients pay by card (including Apple Pay on supported devices) or US bank account, without being sent to another site
- Money goes to your bank - Stripe deposits funds directly
You don’t need to handle any payment information - Stripe manages all the security and compliance.
Tips & Card Fees
You can also let clients add a tip, and pass a credit-card fee of up to 3% on to clients who pay by credit card. Both are off by default. See Tips & Card Fees.
Accepted Payment Methods
Credit & Debit Cards
- Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover
- Payments process instantly
- Great for clients who want immediate confirmation
ACH Bank Transfers
- Direct bank-to-bank payments
- Clients link their bank instantly in the payment window
- Lower fees than cards (especially for large invoices)
- Takes 3-5 business days to clear
- Ideal for larger jobs where the savings add up
Payment Fees
Fees depend on how your client pays:
Card Payments
3.5% + $0.30 per transaction
ACH Bank Transfers
1.4% (max $5.60 per transaction)
Fee Comparison
| Invoice Amount | Card Fee | ACH Fee | You Save with ACH |
|---|---|---|---|
| $500 | $17.80 | $5.60 | $12.20 |
| $1,000 | $35.30 | $5.60 | $29.70 |
| $5,000 | $175.30 | $5.60 | $169.70 |
| $10,000 | $350.30 | $5.60 | $344.70 |
ACH fees are capped at $5.60, making it very cost-effective for larger invoices. Many contractors encourage clients to use ACH for bigger jobs.
These fees are industry-standard for payment processing. Many contractors factor this into their pricing or offer a small discount for check/cash payments.
